Dhanush responds to Nayanthara’s allegation; lawyer warns of Rs 10 crore lawsuit if disputed BTS footage isn’t removed from documentary
Nayanthara’s open letter has sparked controversy after she criticized actor Dhanush for filing a ₹10 crore lawsuit over her Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale. The dispute centers on a three-second behind-the-scenes clip from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan featured in the documentary’s trailer. The issue has created a buzz on social media, with Dhanush’s lawyer now releasing a statement in response.
Dhanush’s lawyer stated that as the film’s producer, “My client is the producer of the film and they know where they have spent each penny for the production of the film. Your client has stated that my client has not commissioned any person to shoot the behind-the-scenes footage and the said statement is baseless. Your client is put to strict proof of the same.”
Dhanush’s lawyer also emphasised that the opposing party’s submission was ambiguous, particularly regarding the ownership of the BTS footage. According to the lawyer, the footage belongs to Dhanush as the producer, not to the individual who recorded it.
Dhanush has given them 24 hours to remove the contents of NRD movie from the documentary. If not, then #Nayanthara, @VigneshShivN and @NetflixIndia will have to face legal actions, and will also be subjected to a 10cr damage pay.

Dhanush’s legal team has instructed Nayanthara to remove the disputed content from the documentary within 24 hours. If not complied with, they warned of legal action, including a ₹10 crore lawsuit against both Nayanthara and Netflix India.
The statement ended with a warning, “Advise your client to take down the content infringing my client’s copyright over the film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan by using the same in your client’s documentary Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale within 24 hours, failing which my client will be forced to initiate appropriate legal action, including but not limited to seeking damages to a sum of Rs 10 crores against your client and Netflix India.”
The controversy started when Nayanthara criticized Dhanush in an open letter for accusing her of copyright infringement. She revealed that her team had been making efforts to secure a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to include material from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in her documentary. Nayanthara’s letter expressed frustration over the legal obstacles and resistance they encountered from Dhanush.
Despite the legal dispute, Nayanthara’s documentary Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale is scheduled to premiere on Netflix tomorrow, November 18. The documentary is eagerly awaited as it delves into her life, career, and relationship with her filmmaker-husband, Vignesh Sivan.
