RIP Manoj Kumar: He was the GHOSTWRITER of Woh Kaun Thi and was responsible for Amitabh Bachchan’s Don and ‘Khaike Paan Banaraswala’ – ASTONISHING trivia you never knew about Bharat Kumar!

Moviegoers across the country woke up on April 4 to the sad news that one of the greatest actors of India, Manoj Kumar, is no more. The veteran actor and filmmaker, known as Bharat Kumar, passed away at the age of 87 at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. His achievements are innumerable and his films evoke emotions and a sense of patriotism even today. In this Bollywood Hungama feature, we’ll focus on some of Manoj Kumar’s lesser-known aspects.

Recently, the song ‘Lag Ja Gale’ was in public discussion as its recreated version was incorporated in Salman Khan’s latest release, Sikandar. The soulful melody was originally a part of Woh Kaun Thi (1964), starring Manoj Kumar and Sadhana. As per the credits, it was written by Dhruva Chatterjee and directed by Raj Khosla. Not many are aware that Manoj Kumar was the ghost-writer and he also directed one of its crucial scenes.

In an interview with Mumbai Mirror in December 2014, Manoj Kumar revealed that he gave the title suggestion and also recommended Sadhana’s name for the female lead. The actress was not sure about the film as, like Manoj Kumar, she was also going through a low phase in her career. Later, she changed her mind. Manoj Kumar said, “I was so relieved when I saw Sadhana at (Delhi) station (where she arrived to shoot for the film).”

Manoj Kumar then said that he wasn’t happy with the scenes and began rewriting them. After reworking on 12-13 scenes, he gave the script to its director Raj Khosla. Manoj Kumar added, “Raj Khosla entered with the original script in one hand and the one I had rewritten in the other. He threw what had been written earlier into the fire and pointing towards me announced that I would be writing the film.”

Manoj Kumar shared an amusing trivia, “After a while Raj Khosla would walk over and ask, ‘Panditji Maharaj, kahan tak pahunche?’ If I’d finished half a scene, he’d shoot that much, then let me return to my writing!”

While shooting a sequence in Kufri near Shimla, Manoj Kumar happened to find an apt snow-clad location. Raj Khosla felt dizzy looking down at the shooting place. This is when he requested Manoj Kumar to film the scene and Bharat Kumar was happy to do so.

Manoj Kumar made Don possible

Manoj Kumar also gave valuable inputs for films that he was not a part of. In fact, he was hugely responsible for the making of Don (1978).

The Amitabh Bachchan-starrer action entertainer was conceived to help producer-cinematographer Nariman Irani, who was going through financial troubles. In another interview with Mumbai Mirror in November 2019, Manoj Kumar said, “I told him (Nariman Irani) to get Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar to write a script for him. He could produce the film with my assistant Chandra Barot as the director. I spoke to Amitabh (Bachchan) and Zeenat who were working on my film and they agreed to act in it.”

After watching the trial of Don, he suggested the makers add two songs, one of them being ‘Khaike Pan Banaraswala’. Manoj Kumar exulted, “They added one, but even Amitabh agrees ‘Khaike Paan Banaraswala’ was my suggestion. The film was a blockbuster.”

Sadly, Nariman Irani passed away nearly 6 months before Don was released.
