“Studio partner had NO faith in Queen; its executives went on a holiday when it released; film was lying in the cans for 1 ½ years” – Anurag Kashyap

Anurag Kashyap had a fascinating conversation with Komal Nahta where he spoke about his several films, including the ones at Phantom Films, a production house which had Anurag as one of the founders. One of the finest films made by this banner was Queen (2014), starring Kangana Ranaut in the lead. It had unanimous acclaim and was a sleeper super-hit. However, Anurag revealed that pre-release, no one had any confidence in the film’s potential.

“Studio partner had NO faith in Queen; its executives went on a holiday when it released; film was lying in the cans for 1 ½ years” – Anurag Kashyap

Anurag said, “The studio partner had no faith in Queen at all. No one had any faith. It got greenlit as it was a low-cost film. Later, they were like ‘Yeh kya hai?’. It was lying in the cans for 1 ½ years. But when I saw the footage for the first time, I enjoyed it a lot. I couldn’t stop laughing. I said, ‘Yeh toh kamaal ki picture hai’. I was asked, ‘Why are you so happy?’. I said, ‘Because this is a very good film’.”

He added, “Queen was the only film where I sat on the edit and I even got the Filmfare Award for Best Editing (laughs). I wondered, ‘Mujhe jo iss film mein dikh raha hai, woh koi aur dekh kyun nahin paa raha?’. That’s why I came on board as the editor. Also, the entire film was built on the performance of Kangana and her improvisations. I could clearly see the great performance of this actor and the arc in her character but others didn’t see it. I don’t know what others were trying to find in that film.”

He further said, “When the film was released, the studio executives went on a holiday. No one had any confidence. Ranjan Singh and Kangana Ranaut together marketed the film. They also had maximum confidence. I was (not in Mumbai as I was) busy shooting Bombay Velvet (2015). Even director Vikas Bahl was with me in Sri Lanka on the sets of Bombay Velvet.”

He stated, “I still remember that Queen’s first day collection was Rs. 85 lakhs. The next day, it collected more than Rs. 1 crore. Slowly, it grew.”
