EXCLUSIVE: Kalki Koechlin reveals, “I have witnessed shows made in a rush, platforms need to give freedom to writers and creators”
Kalki Koechlin recently had an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama on her upcoming international film Her Song. During the same, she also touched upon the issues related to box office and OTT shows.
When asked about the downslide being witnessed at the box office this year, Kalki said, “Everyone is confused. Nobody knows what’s going on. I know the last couple of years, actually, have been difficult for everybody, whether you are an actor, crew member or technician. Everybody has been out of work. From the successful actors to the spot boys, everybody has been feeling the pinch.”
Kalki believes that the reliance on OTT is one of the major reasons for this. “I think it is a combination of things. First, we have put everything on our phones. Nobody is going to the cinemas, especially after COVID happened and everybody was forced to stay at home. Everybody just got into the habit of watching everything on screen online,” she said.
The actress also feels that currently even OTT content has taken a hit as too many shows are popping up. “I can just speak for myself personally. I just feel that there is so much content that you just feel confused about what to watch. I think it has to do with how rushed everything is made. I have witnessed shows that are being made in a rush. I just think that a good show or good film takes time to get created properly,” she said.
Kalki elaborated on her point saying, “I think we need to respect that and platforms need to respect that and give the creators and writers the freedom to make it good and not just produce one after another. I hope those who are investing will understand that nothing can replace the actual work of the writer and the director. A lot of times people create a show based on the cast and concept. It can be the best concept in the world but until someone is writing each and every dialogue carefully and trying to bring out what is the relationship between each of the characters and how do we connect as human beings with them, you don’t have a show.”
During the course of the conversation, Kalki shared that her upcoming project in Hindi is the Amazon MX Payer show Bhay – The Gaurav Tiwari Story, which will release this month. She said that the show is based on the mysterious death of a real ghost hunter named Gaurav Tiwari and that she is playing a writer in it. “If you go to YouTube, you will see a lot of videos of Gaurav Tiwari about what he was doing. He used to go to these haunted places. And he died a very mysterious death,” said Kalki.
