Meerra Chopraa comes out in support of AR Rahman: “‘Trolling him is disgraceful”

Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman recently found himself at the centre of a heated controversy following comments he made about a decline in work opportunities from Hindi cinema over the past eight years. Speaking in an interview with BBC Asian Network, Rahman suggested that while multiple factors could be responsible, there may also be a “communal angle” involved, remarks that triggered sharp criticism from sections of the film industry and sparked a polarised public debate.

Amid the backlash, Rahman has received support from several voices within the entertainment fraternity. The latest to publicly stand by the composer is actor-turned-producer Meerra Chopraa.

Addressing the controversy, Meerra issued a strong statement in Rahman’s defence, calling out the trolling directed at the composer. She wrote, “Only two Indians have truly taken India to the global stage in a way the whole world recognises — Priyanka Chopra and AR Rahman. Trolling him for something he didn’t even mean is not just wrong, it’s disgraceful. Respect the legend. He’s the one who composed the most iconic ‘Vande Mataram’.”

Rahman’s original remarks were based on his personal observation of fewer offers from Hindi cinema in recent years. While he clarified that several reasons could be at play, his reference to a possible communal undertone intensified the debate, drawing mixed reactions from both supporters and critics.

As discussions continue, industry figures like Meerra Chopraa have emphasised Rahman’s legacy and contribution to Indian and global music, urging respect for the legendary composer amid the ongoing discourse.

Meerra’s debut production, Gandhi Talks, features an ensemble cast including Vijay Sethupathi, Aditi Rao Hydari, Arvind Swami, and Priyadarshini Indalkar, with music composed by AR Rahman. The film is described as a contemplative silent feature that explores themes of stillness, silence, and inner strength.
