The romantic musical drama Bewafaa (2005) completed 21 years on February 25. It had an ensemble star cast, comprising Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Anil Kapoor, Manoj Bajpayee, Sushmita Sen and Shamita Shetty and is remembered for its hit soundtrack, touching moments etc. In an interview with Bharathi S Pradhan, the talented director Dharmesh Darshan opened up like never before on the behind-the-scenes happenings.

When Bharathi S Pradhan remarked that Bewafaa gave a déjà vu of B R Chopra’s Gumrah (1963), starring Ashok Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Mala Sinha and Nirupa Roy, Dharmesh Darshan confessed, “Yes, in the first half.”

He also revealed, “Bewafaa had some problems. Boney Kapoor is absolutely amongst the best producers. The film was produced by Sridevi Productions. Boney takes his own time to make films. Meanwhile, the makers of Murder (2004) made the same film (as Bewafaa). They happened to know (what we were making). This happens. In 6 months, with Mallika Sherawat, Emraan Hashmi and Ashmit Patel, they made the same film. By then, the shoot of Bewafaa was 80% complete. So, I had to recorrect my film for rubbish reasons.”

Bewafaa tells the story of a young woman of Indian origin living in Montreal, Canada, who is in love with an aspiring musician. Her pregnant elder sister blesses their relationship and is prepared to convince their parents about their marriage. But tragedy strikes when the sister dies while giving birth to twins, forcing the younger woman to marry her brother-in-law and part ways with her lover. Years later, the once-struggling musician returns to her life as a celebrated singer, at a time when she is trapped in an incompatible marriage.

As for Murder, it tells the story of a young woman trapped in an unhappy marriage with a workaholic who was once married to her late sister. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she crosses paths with an old flame, setting off a chain of dramatic events. The film was directed by Anurag Basu and produced by Mukesh Bhatt and Mahesh Bhatt’s Vishesh Films.
