Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde responds to Deepika Padukone’s concern over AQI: “We are listening to all Mumbaikars”

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde has responded to actress Deepika Padukone after the latter recently raised concerns about the city’s deteriorating air quality on social media. Addressing the issue during a press conference on Friday, March 13, Tawde said the authorities are aware of the concerns being raised by citizens regarding the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI).

“We are listening to all Mumbaikars and not just Deepika Padukone,” Tawde said in Marathi while responding to questions about the actor’s post. She added that the city’s air quality has worsened in recent months and discussions are already underway on measures to tackle the issue.

The response comes days after Deepika took to Instagram Stories on March 12 to highlight the problem. The actor shared a screenshot showing Mumbai’s AQI at around 150 and wrote, “This city (and its children) are choking! How is this okay!? @my_bmc @mybmchealth help.”

Air pollution and rising AQI levels have increasingly become a topic of public discussion across several Indian cities, including Mumbai. While activists and citizens have been consistently raising concerns, only a handful of celebrities have spoken about the issue publicly.

Among them is actress Saiyami Kher, who recently shared her frustration over the worsening air quality in the city. In an Instagram post, she wrote, “I never imagined a day when the very thing we breathe to survive would become a luxury. My doors and windows stay shut. I bought an air purifier. I moved my runs to a treadmill, staring at a wall instead of the sea. And it still isn’t enough.”

Other celebrities, including singer Armaan Malik and actress Vaani Kapoor, have also used their social media platforms in the past to draw attention to the city’s air quality concerns.
