EXCLUSIVE: Chitrangada Satarupa opens up about acting in Arijit Singh’s unreleased directorial Sa: “We were told that it would be released soon…People cry, smile when they hear Dada sing. Yet, when you meet him, he’s the SIMPLEST guy ever”
Arijit Singh is not just an iconic singer; he has also dabbled in direction. Almost a decade ago, he donned the director’s hat for Sa, which stars Chitrangada Satarupa, who will soon be seen in the Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer Main Actor Nahin Hoon. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Chitrangada opened up about working on the film.
Chitrangada Satarupa said, “That would have been my first film, not Tikli And Laxmi Bomb (2017). We also did some reshoots later on. A year ago, we were told that the film would probably get a release soon.”
Talking about Arijit Singh, she revealed, “He is phenomenal. There’s no doubt about it. I call him Dada. He’s a rare breed of talent. Like, how can someone be so talented? Also, the way he can pick up things so fast is crazy. He doesn’t care what he needs to wear. He would sit next to the cinematographer for 10-15 days straight. Then he would try his hand at camerawork, and it would be bang on. He’s an absolute perfectionist. If he wanted a shot in a certain way, he would spend hours on it. It’s more like a passion project for him. He’s not concerned that, since he has produced it, he needs to release it on a certain date. That’s why he’s taking so much time and constantly adding and reducing things.”
Chitrangada Satarupa further stated, “The film is about Indian classical music. If I am not wrong, it’s sort of a tribute to his guru ji. It’s in Bangla and a very rooted film. It was shot close to his hometown in a village. Visually, it looks absolutely beautiful.”
She further praised Arijit, “He’s so humble and grounded. He’s the person whose songs are heard by millions. These listeners cry, smile and fall in love when they hear him sing. Yet, when you meet him, he’s the simplest guy ever. He doesn’t even care that he’s the Arijit Singh. That’s the best part about him.”
In January this year, Arijit Singh stunned fans and the Hindi film industry by announcing his retirement from playback singing. Has Chitrangada Satarupa spoken to him about it? She replied, “I haven’t spoken. I don’t think he’ll quit music. What he meant was playback singing. Music is so close to him; I have seen it. I am sure he’ll bring music in some other way. Probably, he’ll make his own music or dabble in musical cinema. I am absolutely up for the surprise that he’s going to give us (smiles).”
