Karan Johar turns the Met Gala 2026 into a living canvas, pays tribute to Raja Ravi Varma in Manish Malhotra creation
At the 2026 MET Gala, Karan Johar didn’t just make an appearance—he staged a moment that blurred the lines between fashion and cinematic storytelling. Dressed in a custom creation by Manish Malhotra, Johar transformed the iconic MET steps into a moving tribute to legendary painter Raja Ravi Varma.

The ensemble, anchored by a dramatic velvet cloak, unfolded like a living artwork. Intricately handcrafted panels brought Varma’s mythological muses and scenes to life, with motifs inspired by his celebrated works woven into rich silk and gold zari. Set against a deep black base, the look struck a balance between opulence and narrative depth, echoing both heritage and high fashion.
More than just couture, the outfit symbolised a three-decade-long creative partnership between Johar and Malhotra. Their collaboration, which has significantly influenced the visual identity of modern Hindi cinema, found a global stage at the MET Gala—marking yet another milestone in their journey.
Styled by Eka Lakhani, the look seamlessly fused traditional Indian craftsmanship with a contemporary global aesthetic. Accessories further elevated the ensemble—statement eyewear by Anna-Karin Karlsson added a modern architectural edge, while heritage-inspired jewellery from Tyaani Jewellery complemented the intricate gold detailing. Custom footwear by Copper Mallet completed the look, grounding the voluminous silhouette.
Johar later reflected on the emotional significance of the moment, sharing, “From loving cinema and costume as a wide-eyed dreamer to standing on the steps of THE Met Gala…life really does come full circle in the most unexpected ways. This moment wasn’t just about fashion for me. It was about storytelling. About taking the legacy of Raja Ravi Varma and letting it live again… this time, not on canvas, but in motion. To representing India and our culture, our art and our storytelling on the global ‘steps’. Thirty years of friendship and collaboration with Manish Malhotra and still creating firsts together – so grateful to you and your team for this core memory.”
