In his candid review, Anurag Kashyap labelled Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani as the “Best Karan Johar film by far.” He commended Johar for staying true to his signature style while fearlessly pushing the boundaries. The filmmaker expressed his admiration for Karan Johar’s storytelling and hailed the movie as the second KJo film that he not only watched but also recommended to others.

The film’s strong writing, coupled with the impeccable performances by Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, left a lasting impression on Anurag Kashyap. He particularly appreciated the sparkling chemistry between the lead pair and applauded the dialogue writing that authentically depicted how people converse in real life.

One of the standout aspects of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani for Anurag was the captivating unrequited love story portrayed by Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi. Additionally, he praised Jaya Bachchan’s portrayal of a matriarch with patriarchal villainy, lauding the performances of other supporting actors like Tota Roy Chowdhury, Churni Ganguly, and Bashira Amir.

Anurag Kashyap also highlighted the film’s clever use of classic songs and humorous jabs, including a playful nod to Somen Mishra with the song ‘Meri Pyaari Bindu.’ The film’s ability to address societal conditioning, snobbery, shame, and phobias with humour and “joharisms” thoroughly impressed the filmmaker.

Kashyap praised Karan Johar’s audacity to challenge conventional norms and weave a story that resonates with audiences on a deep emotional level. He particularly appreciated the scenes featuring Ranveer Singh and Tota Roy Chowdhury dancing to ‘Dola Re Dola Re’ and Alia Bhatt’s powerful monologue post the Durga Pujo scene.

Anurag Kashyap also acknowledged the innovative approach to the film’s song sequences, where Karan Johar opted for shorter versions, deviating from the norm in mainstream Hindi cinema.
