Korea’s rising stars NewJeans have been making waves in the music industry since their debut days. The rookie group promises a fresh set of musicality with each track and that stands true even with their latest comeback EP Get Up. The six- track EP consists of funky fast paced music tinged with signature NewJeans’ vocals. The EP was released on July 21, 2023 right in conjunction with the Barbenheimer phenomena but the girls still managed to carve out a position for themselves. The title track ‘Super Shy’ topped several iTunes charts and the music video gained over a million

NewJeans’ ‘Get Up’ injects refreshing energy as K-pop newest sonic super girls – Album Review

1. NEW JEANS
New Jeans‘ is a track where the girls sing about their fresh and clean comeback in the K-pop world. The song chimes to the RnB and alternate beats which matches the popping Y2K vibe of NewJeans.

2. SUPER SHY
A bubbly confession of love need not always be rainbows and bubbles, sometimes it can also be a fast-paced retro themed track like ‘Super Shy‘. Many of us have had a time where we had a crush on someone, and they were blissfully unaware. New Jeans articulates this idea beautifully in this track.

3. ETA

Who would have thought that asking for time or arrival is only limited for a transport? NewJeans taps into a cute angle with ‘ETA‘. The quintet sings about being there for their best friend after a bad breakup. The song is all about the female friendship bond where your bestfriends spot the red flags before anyone does!

4. COOL WITH YOU

Cool With You‘ is another bubbly romance track on this album. Staying in line with the retro fantasy theme, the quintet casts another wonderful spell with this track.

5. GET UP

After spraying the misty summery vibes in the previous songs, New Jeans turns to a soft lo-fi-ish mood with ‘Get Up‘. The only drawback of this track? The short duration!

6. ASAP
Once you hear this track, you won’t be able to get it out of your mind! The “tick tock tick tock” which reverbs throughout the track is a rather catchy hook. The song ‘ASAP‘ employs the theme of time within the lyrics and the music which make a memorable track when presented together. With this song, the EP which started on a bouncy note comes to a subdued and mellow conclusion which is bound to leave a lasting impression on the listeners.

In conclusion, we now know a new side to New Jeans’ artistic capabilities. With this 2nd EP, the quintet truly takes it a notch ahead with a newfound idea of the Y2K themes the group is synonymous with. NewJeans comes closer to demystifying teenage love with their latest EP ‘Get Up‘. The retro themes which shout of Y2K nostalgia paired with a slight comical fantasy imagery immediately makes their music appealing to those looking to relive certain nostalgia or simply escape into a pastel-vivid colored world.

The bilingual singing within songs and EPs is seen largely in the up and coming groups. This phenomena is instrumental in getting the groups a global reach at a faster pace than it did with the earlier groups. As the older groups venture towards an enlistment or a hiatus to focus on solo activities, it is rookie groups like NewJeans who keep the interest flaming towards K-pop music. The emergence and rise of dance videos on micro videos has been instrumental in routing the newer groups towards making songs which appeal to a wider audience across age groups.
