Ram Gopal Varma to appear ‘Digitally’ before Andhra Pradesh police over offensive posts on CM Chandrababu Naidu

Film director Ram Gopal Varma has expressed his intent to appear “digitally” before the Andhra Pradesh Police regarding his purported offensive posts about Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and others, according to his lawyer in Hyderabad on Monday.

A case was filed against the director at the Maddipadu police station in Prakasam district on November 11, accusing him of posting morphed images of Chief Minister Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, and their families in an “indecent” manner on social media.

“There is no requirement for physical presence. Now Digital India has come. Likewise, digital policing has also come. So, (physical) presence is not required. Give us virtual mode (opportunity), we will cooperate virtually with the investigation,” the lawyer stated to reporters outside Varma’s residence in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad.

Varma will cooperate with the investigation through “digital mode,” as “digital policing is now prevalent across India,” the lawyer stated. He further claimed that the newly introduced Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) law includes provisions that permit hybrid-mode investigations for “minor cases” like the one against the director.

“Ram Gopal Varma made no mistake. This is neither sedition nor international mafia. We will follow the rule of law,” the lawyer stated, adding that Varma’s response had been sent to the police via WhatsApp and speed post, “which were not yet responded to by the police.”

A dramatic scene unfolded at Varma’s residence on Monday after he failed to appear before the Andhra Pradesh police. According to local news channels, a police team from the state was seen waiting outside the director’s house.

“He (Varma) did not turn up (for the investigation). We are going ahead legally. He was absent for the second time also. First time, he asked for more time and we gave him one week’s permission,” said A R Damodar, the Prakasam district superintendent of police, in an interview with PTI.

According to police sources, Varma was granted an extension until November 24 after he requested more time due to prior film shooting commitments. He had been summoned for investigation on Monday.

“He (Varma) said he will come any time after November 24. As per his request, we gave him time and summoned him on November 25. Whatever reasons he may cite now, there will be no legal sanctity,” said a police official, adding that two police teams have been sent to Hyderabad.

The case against Varma was filed following a complaint from one Ramalingam (45) of Maddipadu, under various sections of the law.

Ramalingam filed the case, alleging that Varma’s purported social media posts damaged the reputation of the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and their families in society, and also defamed their personal characters.
