EXCLUSIVE: Sriram Raghavan follows in the footsteps of Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino; shoots a chunk of Ikkis old-fashioned way: “When you shoot on film, you imbibe the discipline of a shoot. It’s akin to army discipline”
We are living in a digital age and gone are the days when stocks of film reels would be ordered for shoots. Those were the days when multiple retakes were discouraged, as it would lead to wastage of film stock. The switch to digital filmmaking made the process simpler and hassle-free. Yet, it’s common to hear of filmmakers going back to film or wanting to do so. In Hollywood, Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, etc. continue to be hardcore celluloid loyalists as they still use traditional methods for some or all their films. But this revival didn’t happen in Bollywood. Finally, Sriram Raghavan took the initiative with Ikkis, starring Agastya Nanda.

It tells the story of Arun Khetarpal, who, at 21, became the youngest recipient of the Param Vir Chakra for the bravery he showed during the 1971 India-Pakistan war. Bollywood Hungama has exclusively learned that Sriram Raghavan shot the portions of Agastya’s character training in National Defence Academy (NDA) at Khadakvasala, Pune, on film.
Bollywood Hungama spoke to Sriram Raghavan to explain the reason behind it. He explained, “We have depicted different time periods in this film. In the NDA portions, Arun is the youngest. Also, to give it a distinct flavour, we decided to shift to film.”
Sriram Raghavan further said, “Moreover, when you shoot on film, you imbibe the discipline of a shoot. It’s akin to army discipline. You can’t waste film and you can only take shots of a certain length. So, it added to the fun. I had already worked on film before and so had my DOP, Anil Mehta. Hence, we decided to try it out.”
Sriram Raghavan confessed that he’s happy with the end result, “It looks very good on screen.”
Ikkis also stars Jaideep Ahlawat, newcomer Simar Bhatia and the late Dharmendra. Produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films, it releases in cinemas on January 1, 2026.
