EXCLUSIVE: Luv Ranjan on De De Pyaar De 2’s SHOCKING climax: “It was a trick from heist films; I was attempting a ROM-CON!”; adds, “If you don’t push boundaries, romcom genre will become stagnant… Pyaar Ka Punchnama’s ending was also unpredictable”
Following the success of De De Pyaar De (2019), the makers of the film released a sequel, De De Pyaar De 2 in cinemas in November 2025. The first part told the story of a 50-year-old Ashish (Ajay Devgn) who falls in love with 26-year-old Ayesha (Rakul Preet Singh). Trouble arose when Ashish introduced Ayesha to his family as well as his estranged partner, Manju (Tabu). In De De Pyaar De 2, Ayesha decides to inform her father, Rakesh (R Madhavan), and mother, Anju (Gautami Kapoor), that she’s dating Ashish and also arranges their meeting with him. Rakesh and Anju have reservations with the age gap and they try to break their relationship. The lovers break-up in the pre-climax but a solid twist emerges in the last 15 minutes, which left all the viewers stunned. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, producer Luv Ranjan opened up on this aspect.

When remarked that no one in their wildest dreams was able to predict the finale of De De Pyaar De 2, Luv Ranjan joked, “Yes, because I was attempting a rom-con!”
Some people did have reservations over the fact that it was all staged, especially the breakdown of Ayesha. Though the majority of the people accepted the twist, did he fear that an ending of this sort would be a risk?
Luv Ranjan answered, “Yes, I did think of it. At the same time, you have to keep pushing boundaries. Otherwise, you’ll never be able to evolve a genre. It was a trick from heist films, if you think of it. What I mean is, you see that kind of twist in a heist film. When we were writing it, the whole idea was – what if we combine the language of a heist film with a romcom and a drama? Then what happens? (laughs)”
He continued, “When we made Pyaar Ka Punchnama (2011), nobody expected such an ending. It was never attempted before where all three boys left the three girls. When we made Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety (2018), no one was able to predict its ending either.”
He added, “Romcom is an extremely predictable genre. If you start narrating an idea for a romcom, I’ll be able to tell you how it’ll end. This ‘how’ matters a lot in this genre. Hence, you need to try new things. Or else, the genre is going to become stagnant.”
