“Proud”: Karan Johar and Neeraj Ghaywan REACT after Homebound misses Oscars 2026 nomination

India’s quest for an Academy Award in the Best International Feature Film category remains unfulfilled as the country’s official entry, Homebound, failed to secure a nomination for the 98th Academy Awards. The announcement, made on Thursday, January 22, by actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman, confirmed that the Neeraj Ghaywan directorial did not make the final cut of five films.

Despite the setback, the film’s producers and director expressed a sense of pride and camaraderie. Shortly after the nominations were revealed, producer Karan Johar took to his Instagram story to share his reaction. Posting several stills from the film, he expressed his unwavering admiration for the project and its visionary director.

“Proud!!! Love you Neeraj Ghaywan for allowing us to bask in your light,” Johar wrote, signaling that the film’s value transcends award recognition.

Director Neeraj Ghaywan was quick to acknowledge the producer’s constant support. Reposting Johar’s story, Ghaywan expressed his gratitude, stating, “Thank you, @karanjohar! You have been an absolute rock. Couldn’t have come this far without you. Love you.”

While the Oscar nomination remained elusive, Homebound has enjoyed a stellar run on the global stage. Produced by Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, and Adar Poonawalla under the Dharma Productions banner, the film premiered to critical acclaim in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. It further solidified its impact at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it was named the Second Runner-Up for the International Audience Choice Award.

Inspired by a 2020 New York Times article by journalist Basharat Peer, the film features Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor. Set against the backdrop of the COVID-19 lockdown, it tells the poignant story of two friends from marginalized backgrounds, Shoaib and Chandan, who struggle to navigate systemic discrimination and economic hardship while attempting to find their way home.
