Govind Namdev recalls being “mentally scattered” after his role was cut from Saudagar: “I couldn’t bear what…”
Veteran actor Govind Namdev has spoken candidly about one of the most difficult phases of his career — when his role in Subhash Ghai’s Saudagar was removed entirely during editing despite being shot and completed.
In an interview with The Lallantop, Namdev recalled the excitement he felt after being cast in the film, which featured screen legends Dilip Kumar and Raaj Kumar. He shared that after shooting for two days, he received praise from Ghai in front of the unit and excitedly informed friends and acquaintances about his involvement in the project.
“When I got this film, and I shot it for one day, shot it for two days, Subhash Ghai was very happy. He praised me in front of everyone. As soon as it was two days and I got a response like this, I told everyone in my circle. My film is coming. My film is coming. I am working with Dilip Kumar. I am working with Raj Kumar. I told everyone,” he said.
However, after the film wrapped and post-production began, he was not called in for dubbing. When he approached producer Ashok Ghai, he was informed that the film’s runtime had become too long. “The film was very big. It was 4.5 hours long. While editing, it was more than 3.5 hours long… Then someone suggested that your character could be removed entirely, to cut around 10-12 minutes. Finally, the entire character was removed,” Namdev recalled.
The decision left him devastated. “And as soon as they said it was removed, I suddenly became numb. And after that, I mean, I am scattered mentally. I am drinking beer all day. I am roaming at night. I am sitting by the sea. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know what to do. It’s gone,” he said.
Reflecting on the emotional toll, Namdev added, “If it wasn’t for my wife, maybe I would have died… I couldn’t bear what people would say about me… So, I used to cry a lot. I used to hold my wife and cry.”
Speaking of the professional front, Govind Namdev was last seen in Raid 2, followed by the recently released web show Bindiya Ke Bahubali.
