Manoj Bajpayee, Randeep Hooda, and Vivek Oberoi applaud Boong after historic BAFTA 2026 win: “This achievement brings pride and hope”
The 79th edition of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards saw a significant milestone for Indian cinema as Boong won the award for Best Children’s & Family Film. The Manipuri-language coming-of-age drama, written and directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, became the first Indian film to win in the category.

Soon after the announcement, several members of the Indian film fraternity shared congratulatory messages on social media. Actor Manoj Bajpayee described the win as a proud moment for Manipur and Indian cinema. In his post, he congratulated Lakshmipriya Devi and praised performances by young actors Gugun Kipgen and Bala Hijam. He also acknowledged producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani for backing what he termed a rooted and meaningful film.

Actor Randeep Hooda noted that the achievement brought pride and hope at a time when Manipur is healing. He congratulated the director and the team, adding that stories from the region continue to find a wider platform.

Vivek Oberoi also reacted, calling it a landmark moment as the first Indian film to win the BAFTA in the Best Children’s & Family Film category. He commended the producers for their continued support of distinctive cinema and described the film as one that has connected across borders.

Boong, starring Gugun Kipgen, Bala Hijam, Angom Sanamatum, Vikram Kochhar, Nemetia Ngangbam, Jenny Khurai and Hamom Sadananda, had its world premiere at the Discovery section of the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, 2024. The film’s international journey culminated in its BAFTA win this year.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, along with filmmakers Karan Johar and Alia Bhatt, were among several public figures who congratulated the team on the film’s achievement at BAFTA Awards 2026.
