32 years of Anjaam EXCLUSIVE: “Wrote Madhuri Dixit’s dialogues keeping Amitabh Bachchan in mind,” reveals Rumy Jafry, also says the actress deserved an award for this film instead of Hum Aapke Hain Koun…! that year
Filmmaker Rahul Rawail’s Madhuri Dixit Nene, Shah Rukh Khan and Deepak Tijori starrer Anjaam completed 32 years today. The film was about the extreme heights a wealthy businessman (Khan) goes to win the girl (Dixit) he is obsessed with. On the film’s anniversary, veteran writer and filmmaker Rumy Jafry, who wrote its dialogues, shared some interesting memories attached to the movie in an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama.

Amitabh Bachchan connection in Madhuri Dixit’s dialogues
Anjaam saw Madhuri play an air hostess Shivani Chopra who is accused of a crime she didn’t commit. She later fights back to avenge the wrong done to her. Jafry said that he used an interesting strategy to write dialogues for Madhuri’s character. “For the part in the second half where she goes onto the revenge mode, I used to close my eyes and imagine Amitabh Bachchan in that scene. Then I used to write the line and change the gender,” he said.
“Madhuri Dixit deserved an award for this film instead of Hum Aapke Hain Koun…!”
During the 1995 Filmfare Awards, Madhuri Dixit was adjudged Best Actress for her performance in Hum Aapke Hain Koun…! Jafry believes that she deserved that award for Anjaam. “At that time, there was an article with the headline – ‘Success over power of the performance’. It meant that Madhuri gave a better performance in Anjaam but she got the award for Hum Aapke Hain Koun…! as it was more successful. Shah Rukh did win the award for Best Actor in a Negative Role for this film,” he said.
Didn’t consider Shah Rukh Khan a villain while writing his dialogues
SRK played an out-and-out bad guy in Anjaam called Vijay Agnihotri. But Jafry didn’t write his dialogues by considering him as a villain. “I said that he is not a villain; he is a negative character,” he said. “And this is because he loves Madhuri more than Deepak Tijori does. But his way and approach are wrong. It is not love when the girl loves someone else and marries that person and you still continue to pursue her. But he also loves her. That’s why I wrote his dialogues while thinking about him as a hero, not a villain.”

Sharing his experience with Khan, Jafry said, “He has always been cultured and educated. Both of us have the background of theatre. I knew him from before but we were not friends. But during Anjaam, we had become friends. We used to chit chat and discuss things. The way he respects and gives attention to people, brings you closer to him.”
Violence was criticized in the film
Anjaam had the kind of violence that was way ahead of its time. Jafry said that the violent visuals in the film did receive its share of criticisms. “People criticized the violence in the second half,” he said. “At that time, it was not common. Today it is regular. The scene where Madhuri bites Tinnu Anand’s hand and his flesh comes out, people said what did you make her do! I was around 24-25 then. My family, relatives and friends used to say that I am so innocent and someone who cracks jokes. So they were like, ‘How did you write such a serious film? Yeh wala Rumy Jafry kaun hai?’ (laughs).”
He added, “So, then I did a comedy like Waqt Humara Hai to come out of it. We know how Dilip Kumar did Ram Aur Shyam to come out of Devdas.” Jafry said that after Waqt Humara Hai, he met David Dhawan and wrote Saajan Chale Sasural and Coolie No. 1 for him, thus starting his long association with the filmmaker, which continues even today.
Got Anjaam because of Rishi Kapoor
Jafry got a chance of working with Rahul Rawail because of Rishi Kapoor. “As we know, the industry is always in search of new talent,” he said. “Before this, my film Shreemaan Aashique had released. But after a week of its release, Mumbai blasts happened. However, because of that film, I became good friends with Rishi Kapoor. So, Chintu ji used to spread the word about me in the industry. He also told about me to his best friend Rahul Rawail and told him which all films I have written.”
It was an honour for Jafry to write a film directed by Rawail. “At that time, everyone was a fan of Rahul ji. We had seen Love Story and Betaab during our college days and we had become crazy for those films. It was a big opportunity for a new writer like me,” he said.
