Anupam Kher opens up on selling Mumbai properties bought by Alia Bhatt; explains why he prefers rented homes

Veteran actor Anupam Kher recently opened up about an important life decision — selling his properties in Mumbai and embracing a rental lifestyle instead. During a candid conversation on Zindagi With Richa, the actor explained why owning a house no longer felt meaningful to him and how simplifying life became a conscious choice rather than a financial necessity.

Speaking about the shift, Anupam Kher said, “Kirron (Kher) and I moved to a different place, and it took us four years to find it. Then she became an MP and shifted to Chandigarh. At one point, I wondered why we were even searching so hard for a house. So we just started living simply.”

The actor made it clear that the decision had nothing to do with money troubles. Instead, it stemmed from changing priorities and the realization that renting often comes with fewer complications than owning property. His remarks reflect a growing mindset among many urban homeowners who prefer flexibility over long-term commitments.

Anupam Kher also shared his thoughts on wealth, ambition, and the endless cycle of wanting more. Reflecting on how success and failure shape people, he said, “If you have Rs 10 crore, you start wanting Rs 20 crore, then Rs 25 crore. But failure teaches you. It helps you grow, reinvent yourself, and reminds you that you’re alive. Failure, at every step, pushes creativity and innovation. You shouldn’t feel self-pity. I do feel it sometimes, but after that, I find joy in living again. People have forgotten how to truly live.”

His words offered a deeper perspective on how setbacks can often become turning points in life, encouraging growth and self-discovery. Known for his motivational outlook and honest opinions, Kher’s reflections resonated strongly with audiences.

On the personal front, the actor also spoke about a touching gesture for his mother. He revealed that he bought a large property in Shimla because she had always dreamed of owning a home there. Despite her preference for a simple lifestyle, Kher wanted to surprise her with something even bigger than she had imagined.

According to earlier DNA reports, Anupam Kher had sold two Mumbai properties in 2015 for Rs. 3.83 crore and Rs. 8.99 crore. Those properties were later reportedly purchased by Alia Bhatt.

With his latest revelations, Anupam Kher has once again shown that for him, happiness lies not in material possessions, but in meaningful experiences and simple living.
