EXCLUSIVE: Vinod Bachchan promises Ginny Wedss Sunny 2 is a clean entertainer that can be watched with family: “It’s like a Rajshri film”; reveals why romcom was postponed from April 2 to April 24: “Poori industry Dhurandhar se dari hui thi”
A day before the release of Ginny Wedss Sunny 2, producer Vinod Bachchan spoke exclusively to Bollywood Hungama about the film’s theme, why he prefers to make clean family entertainers and a lot more.

Ginny Wedss Sunny 2 is all set to release tomorrow. As a producer, what’s going through your mind right now?
I am very happy that, in times of crisis, I, as an individual producer, can bring my film to audiences in cinemas. Hence, it’s a cause for celebration (smiles).
Ginny Weds Sunny (2020) had a direct-to-OTT release, while Ginny Wedss Sunny 2 will have a theatrical release. It’s quite a rare occurrence. Did you ever think of releasing the second part directly on OTT?
Even the first part was meant for theatres. But due to the Covid-induced lockdown, there was no way we could have brought the film to cinemas. Meanwhile, Netflix gave us an offer to release the film directly on their platform, and I accepted it.
Ginny Weds Sunny was quite liked and it trended very well for nearly 3-4 years. When I heard the story of Ginny Wedss Sunny 2, I realized that it belongs to the kind of films that we have always believed in like Tanu Weds Manu (2011), Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana (2017) etc. Our films are about the common man and are meant for all. Hence, we always wanted to bring it to the cinemas first. After all, ek film ko respect cinema se hi milta hai.
Nevertheless, OTT is also very important as it helps our films reach the farthest territories possible. When viewers in foreign countries watch Hindi films on OTT, whether big-budget or small-sized, they feel more inclined towards our cinema. Consequently, our films are then able to do business of Rs. 1000 crore plus theatrically.

The first part starred Vikrant Massey and Yami Gautam. Did you ever think of repeating them in Ginny Wedss Sunny 2 or did you always want to go for a fresh pairing?
Firstly, this is not a sequel. The story and the characters are different this time. In Ginny Weds Sunny, Yami delivered one of the best performances of her career. Vikrant was very new at that time. I had seen him in a few shows and realized that he has tremendous potential. Similarly, I had cast Rajkummar Rao, who was also very new, when we signed him for Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana (2017). It was an apt film for him and it became a cult classic.
Similarly, Avinash Tiwary is a brilliant actor who deserves to shoulder a commercial film. Medha Shankr is very talented and I can guarantee that she’ll carve a space for herself in the future.
I like promoting such new talent. I feel, ‘Nobody gave me the opportunity, but at least, I should be the medium and try to promote promising talent’. And I am so glad my approach is paying dividends. Everyone who worked on Tanu Weds Manu went on to do well in their respective careers. The same goes for the team of Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana or Ginny Weds Sunny. I was only 14 when I came to the city. I had lost both my parents. The kind of struggle I have seen, I wish nobody should go through it. Hence, I feel strongly about giving a chance to those who deserve it. That’s why I try to launch new music directors, lyricists, directors, writers etc.
Reliable sources in the trade told us that Ginny Wedss Sunny 2 was initially scheduled for a release on April 2 and was then pushed to April 24. Now, your film clashes with Michael, which has had strong advance sales. Bhooth Bangla released a week earlier, while there’ll be three releases next week…
I’ll tell you very honestly. Poori industry Dhurandhar se dari hui thi. Everyone knew that the film would do extraordinary collections and perform strongly for a month. Also, everyone was excited for it, including us.

Zee Studios is our well-wisher and has really helped us a lot in making the film. They told us to move from April 2. They told me, ‘Vinod ji, nuksaan ho jaayega kyunki Dhurandhar 4 week ke pehle utarne waali nahin hai’. They remarked that Ginny Wedss Sunny 2 is not a front-loaded film which will attract audiences in hordes from the first day. Instead, it’s a film that would grow by word of mouth. They suggested that I should arrive on a clean week. Hence, we postponed from April 2 to April 24. The date was ideal as Bhooth Bangla was then going to release on April 10. But they pushed the film by a week.
Nevertheless, 80% of your success depends on destiny and the remaining 20% on your hard work! April 24 is a good date. Numerologically, it’s correct as well, as it adds up to 6 (smiles). September 6 is my birth date. Hence, I was advised to go for a date that totals 6. Luckily, I got the April 24 slot. Now, it all depends on God, and I am praying to Him.
Any final thoughts?
Please pray for us, the individual producers. We aim to make family-friendly cinema and entertain viewers thoroughly. In small towns, the cinema is the primary mode of entertainment. Also, many people don’t watch films with their families as they are scared, ‘Beti saath mein baithi hai. Pata nahin yeh film mein kya hoga.’ However, with Ginny Wedss Sunny 2, one doesn’t need to have any such apprehensions. This is in the Rajshri zone of cinema. I am a big fan of their banner and have thoroughly enjoyed their films. I hope we can also inspire filmmakers to make such clean family entertainers.
Moreover, while entertaining the audience, we also like to subtly deliver a social message. Ginny Wedss Sunny 2 mein bhi haste-hasate humne youth ke liye ek baat kahi hai.
