EXCLUSIVE: Anand Raaj Anand reveals composing ‘Oye Raju’ was a challenge: “Govinda ki aankhon mein itni shararat hoti hai…”; also reveals he originally sang ‘Thukra Ke Mera Pyaar’: “I had no idea Zee got Krishna Beura to sing…”

Anand Raaj Anand has an illustrious career and has arguably worked the most with actor Govinda. Both collaborated on as many as 7 films – Pardesi Babu (1998), Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai (2000), Hadh Kar Di Aapne (2000), Kyo Kii Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta (2001), Jodi No 1 (2001), Chal Chala Chal (2009) and Deewana Main Deewana (2013). In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, the music composer opened up about it and a lot more.

Interestingly, the film Pardesi Babu also has Govinda mouthing the funny dialogue, ‘Anand Raaj Anand…Anand Hi Anand’! The composer laughed when reminded about it and added, “My bond with him has been lovely. Every film that Chi Chi bhaiyya and I worked on, the music was a super hit. We made a sad song for him, which didn’t seem possible initially, ‘Oye Raju’.”

When asked why he said so, Anand Raaj Anand replied, “Making a song with Govinda on sad notes was very difficult and challenging. Govinda ki aankhon mein itni shararat hoti hai that audience can’t imagine that his eyes can be sad. It’s difficult to think ki yeh aadmi udaas hoke khada hai. However, look at the way he performed in the song. Hanste hanste rula diya tha! I am very happy that I did a patriotic song for him as well, ‘It Happens Only In India’ (Pardesi Babu).”

Another sad song of Anand Raaj Anand that stood out as a singer and composer is ‘Dil De Diya Hai’ from Masti (2004). For a film titled Masti, a sex comedy with peppy songs, the sad song is the most loved track on the album. Is he surprised by this aspect?

Anand Raaj Anand explained, “I was sure it would stand the test of time. I have a habit – I have to tear a lot of pages, but until I connect with the emotion, I don’t lock a song. Before turning music director, I was an audience. I have bunked school and gone to watch films. I used to listen to songs. I also used to observe which songs would compel viewers to go to the toilet and which songs would keep them glued to their seats. I made up my mind that aisa gaana nahin banana hai ki audience uth jaaye. There are only 2 types of Bollywood songs – ek, jisme log baithe rehte hai, aur ek jisme log uth jaate hai. There’s no other type!”

Anand Raaj Anand continued, “Agar main khud nahin roya, toh main audience ko nahin rula sakta. If I don’t dance, I can’t expect the listener to shake their leg while listening to the song. The other important thing is simplicity. Alfaaz saada ho lekin unme wazan zyada ho! I take care of these things a lot.”

It is often said that songs nowadays don’t have the same impact as before. He opined, “I don’t think so. Some of the songs of Arijit Singh are soulful. However, earlier, there was more of a human touch while composing songs. Lyrics were simple. Anand Bakshi saab seedhi-seedhi baat karte the gaano mein aur logon ko pasand aati thi. Now, lyrics are complex.”

He smiled and assured, “However, now that I am back, I’ll make sure I’ll keep my style intact.”

A conversation with Anand Raaj Anand on sad songs can’t be complete without speaking about ‘Thukra Re Mera Pyaar’ from Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana (2017). Interestingly, it was a song that suited his voice but he wasn’t its singer.

Anand Raaj Anand revealed, “Actually, I sang this song and sent it to Anurag Bedi ji of Zee Music Company on the recommendation of producer Vinod Bachchan ji. Anurag Bedi ji got Krishna Beura to sing the song. I had no idea Krishna sang the song. I learned about it when the song was released. The trailer featured the version that I had sung. Nevertheless, the song became a hit and that made us happy. It has crossed 1 billion views.”
