Imtiaz Ali reveals AR Rahman wanted Ranbir Kapoor to sing all songs in Rockstar: “He had freaked out doubly more than me”
Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has shared an interesting behind-the-scenes story from the making of Rockstar, revealing that music maestro A.R. Rahman once suggested that Ranbir Kapoor should sing the film’s songs himself. The revelation came through an audio note shared by Imtiaz on Instagram. The filmmaker has recently been posting such recordings, seemingly as part of the promotional campaign for his upcoming directorial venture, Main Vaapas Aaunga.

Recalling his conversations with Rahman during the making of Rockstar, Imtiaz said the composer was curious about Ranbir’s musical abilities. “I remember AR Rahman sir had asked me during Rockstar whether Ranbir sings. If he could, then Rahman sir thought it’s a great idea for him to sing all the songs of Rockstar. And I said, ‘No sir, Please don’t even go in that direction.’ And Rahman was like, ‘Let’s see how good or bad he is.’”
Imtiaz revealed that he later informed Ranbir about Rahman’s suggestion. The actor’s reaction, according to him, was one of complete panic. “I had told Ranbir, and Ranbir had freaked out doubly more than me and he said, ‘No, please. I never want to sing in front of him.’”
Rockstar, released in 2011, remains one of the most celebrated collaborations between Imtiaz Ali, Ranbir Kapoor and A.R. Rahman. The film’s soundtrack, featuring songs such as ‘Sadda Haq,’ ‘Nadaan Parindey’ and ‘Tum Ho,’ continues to enjoy immense popularity among music lovers.
In another recent conversation with podcaster Raj Shamani, Imtiaz also revisited the making of the iconic track Sadda Haq. The director revealed that he had secretly instructed Ranbir to do something unexpected during the performance sequence. “I told him when you will be in the take you keep playing the music, be with music but at some point fly out of the music and just scream. We were not going to keep it in the film, but I wanted him to do it.”
Imtiaz said no one else on the set was aware of the plan. “Nobody else knew about it, so I told the crew, whatever he does, just capture it and cut only when I say.” The filmmaker recalled that the spontaneous moment left the crew surprised. “Nobody really knew what was happening. But when it happened, I remember Ranbir was on stage, and when the shot ended, he looked up with an expression that seemed to say, ‘Where am I? What just happened?’”
On the work front, Imtiaz Ali is preparing for the release of Main Vaapas Aaunga, starring Naseeruddin Shah, Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari and Vedang Raina. Meanwhile, Ranbir Kapoor is gearing up for one of the biggest projects of his career, Ramayana, in which he will portray Lord Ram.
