Kangana Ranaut calls nursing the “most sexualised profession”; says nurses deserve greater respect
As Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata gears up for its theatrical release on June 12, actress Kangana Ranaut has spoken about the need to change society’s perception of nurses and healthcare support staff. The actor, who plays a nurse in the upcoming period crime thriller, said the profession is often overlooked despite its critical role in the healthcare system.
The film is inspired by true events surrounding the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks and focuses on the courage displayed by medical staff at Mumbai’s Cama and Albless Hospital. Rather than centering on conventional heroes, the story highlights the contributions of nurses, ward boys and hospital workers who continued serving patients during one of the country’s darkest nights.
In an exclusive conversation with ANI, Kangana reflected on how nurses are viewed in society and expressed hope that the film can help bring about a change. “Badlaav hona chahiye logon ke jo bhaav hai unke liye usme badlaav hona chahiye (We want to change people’s emotions and perceptions). I think it is the most sexualised profession,” she said.
The actress also pointed out how nurses are often subjected to disrespectful attitudes despite performing some of the most demanding tasks in hospitals. “Humari film mein dialogue bhi hai ki do log nurse ko dekhkar time mila to do chaar baatein bhi kar lo. That is the reality,” Kangana shared while discussing the social stereotypes associated with the profession.
She further emphasised the importance of recognising nurses’ contributions beyond their routine duties. “We don’t give them the respect they deserve. Nurses do a lot of important work, from cleaning patients to ensuring the hospital functions smoothly. If our perspective changes because of this film, even for a few minutes, it will be meaningful,” she said.
Kangana also drew attention to the countless support workers who help healthcare institutions function every day. According to her, discussions around hospitals often focus solely on doctors, while many others remain invisible despite their essential contributions. “When we think about hospitals, we naturally think of doctors, and their contribution is immense. But why don’t we pause and think about the millions of workers who keep the system running every day?” she said.
Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata places these unsung heroes at the centre of its narrative. The film follows an ordinary nurse balancing family responsibilities with professional duty as a terror attack unfolds around her. By focusing on those who worked behind the scenes during the crisis, the film seeks to shed light on acts of courage that often go unnoticed.
