Pooja Hegde calls Govinda’s fashion “complete madness” as she decodes 90s Bollywood style: “Nobody cared about looking ‘cool’”
As audiences continue to celebrate the return of old-school Bollywood entertainers, conversations around the colourful and unapologetically dramatic style of 1990s Hindi cinema have also resurfaced. Actor Pooja Hegde, who will be seen in Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, recently reflected on the fashion trends that defined the era and the stars who made them memorable.
According to Pooja, the biggest difference between 90s Bollywood fashion and today’s style landscape was the confidence with which actors carried even the most unconventional looks. “90s Bollywood fashion had personality,” she said. “Nobody was trying to look subtle. Everything was dramatic, colourful and completely committed to its zany world.”
The actor also revisited one of the most recognisable fashion phases associated with Salman Khan. Referring to his scarf-clad looks from several films and songs, Pooja said the superstar made the style his own. “Only Salman sir could make a scarf feel like it belongs to him,” she said. “That entire phase was iconic because it looked effortless even though it was so stylised. I loved ‘Chunari Chunari’ and we have paid homage to it in our film.”
Pooja also singled out actress Karisma Kapoor as one of the defining fashion icons of that decade. Known for her vibrant outfits and bold colour combinations, Karisma’s looks continue to be remembered by Bollywood fans. “Karisma could wear neon green pants with a bright orange top and somehow still look amazing,” Pooja said. “That confidence made the styling work. Today, people would overthink those looks, but back then, actors wore everything with full conviction.”
Another name that immediately came to her mind was Govinda, whose larger-than-life fashion choices became a signature part of his on-screen persona. “Govinda fashion was complete madness,” she said with a laugh. “But that’s what made it unforgettable. There was joy in it. Nobody cared about looking ‘cool’ all the time.”
Pooja believes that this sense of fun is one of the key reasons audiences continue to feel nostalgic about 90s Bollywood fashion. Unlike today’s carefully curated trends, the styling of that era was often bold, experimental and designed primarily to entertain.
