‘SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi has a 30-minute sequence from Ramayana,’ reveals writer Vijayendra Prasad: “Spellbound”
SS Rajamouli’s ambitious action-adventure film Varanasi continues to generate curiosity, and a fresh revelation from veteran writer Vijayendra Prasad has added another layer of intrigue to the much-awaited project. At a recent fan interaction hosted by Filmy Focus, Vijayendra Prasad, who has penned the story for the film, opened up about a sequence that he had previously described as one that could leave audiences stunned. While discussing the project, he finally offered a glimpse into what viewers can expect.

When asked whether the much-talked-about 30-minute sequence was mythological, spiritual, or political in nature, Prasad revealed, “It’s a war between Rama and Kumbhakarna.”
The statement immediately sparked speculation among fans. Many are now wondering whether Prithviraj Sukumaran, who plays a key role in the film, could be portraying Kumbhakarna in the story’s mythological portions. Without giving away too many details, Prasad referred to visuals that had already appeared in promotional material. “You saw in the trailer, right? You saw Rama and Kumbhakarna. You saw Lord Hanuman’s tail and a chariot on it. I’m talking about that… spellbound,” he said.
However, the celebrated writer stopped short of elaborating further. When questioned about reports that the film explores concepts related to different timelines or time zones, Prasad chose to remain guarded. “We shouldn’t talk about it anymore,” he replied.
The latest comments have reignited discussions around the film’s mythological elements. While Varanasi is being promoted as a globe-trotting action adventure, several reports and promotional hints have suggested that the narrative draws inspiration from Indian mythology, particularly stories connected to Lord Rama and Lord Hanuman.
Interestingly, Rajamouli himself had earlier confirmed that Mahesh Babu would appear as Lord Rama in a portion of the film. Speaking at an event last year, the filmmaker recalled seeing the actor in costume for the first time.
“On the first day, when Mahesh came in Lord Rama’s get-up for the photoshoot, I had goosebumps. I was torn. Mahesh has the charm of Krishna, but the calmness of Rama. Still, I was confident. I even set that photo as my wallpaper and then removed it so that no one would see it,” Rajamouli had said.
The film stars Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran in leading roles. It is currently under production and is expected to arrive in theatres during the Sankranti 2027 festive window.
