Did Dhurandhar affect Alpha’s box office outcome? Trade experts share their views: “You can’t escape comparison with Dhurandhar. It’ll remain in front of you always”
Alpha has not worked at the box office and it is believed that it got affected due to the change in audiences’ tastes after Dhurandhar. We spoke to trade experts over this perception.
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “Post-Dhurandhar, the mindset towards spy thrillers, especially with the Pakistan angle, has changed completely. Logon ki soch badli hai and they have voiced that as well.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan commented, “There’s some negativity about the Spy Universe. A section of the netizens is trying to run down the film. They allege that it’s soft towards Pakistan. Moreover, they compare it with Dhurandhar. But this film was shot way before Dhurandhar. So, it was illogical to compare the two films. It was unfortunate that the film got delayed for certain reasons. The teaser didn’t generate the desired response.”
At the same time, he said, “You can’t escape comparison with Dhurandhar. It’ll remain in front of you always. Whenever people talk of the Spy Universe, the first comparison will be Dhurandhar. A film like Dhurandhar comes once in a lifetime. It redefines storytelling and it needs to be taken care of. It has set a benchmark.”
Meanwhile, Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar, completely rejected this belief, “This is a myopic point of view propagated online by those who have zero idea about the business. Didn’t people come in big numbers to watch Alpha over the weekend? Many were predicting an opening of Rs. 4 crores; it ended up collecting close to Rs. 10 crores on the day of release. The reports are bad and yet, it didn’t stop moviegoers from checking it out. The theatrical audience has not taken a vow that ‘Hum Dhurandhar level ki hi film dekhenge’. Dhurandhar is done-and-dusted. It is out of their system. They crave for anything that excites them.”
He continued, “The theatrical audience is like a hungry beast on the hunt. It will look at any new prey that excites it and will go for it, and its appetite is unlimited. The prey has to be exciting. They should think, ‘Yeh nahin khaya maine bahut dino se’. If you feed them one kind of food all the time, it’ll get bored. Give them something different each day and all will be well. Repetition destroys theatrical business.”
Girish Johar, producer and eminent film business analyst, agreed, “Clearly, the social media trolling has not affected, going by the weekend numbers. The aam junta does not care. If they like a film, they’ll go for it.”
